Yoshida Takashi (吉田隆), born in 1948, is a Japanese painter working within the tradition of yōga (洋画), the movement of Western-style painting developed in modern Japan. His work is distinguished by a sensitive treatment of landscape subjects and an emphasis on atmosphere, tranquillity and the changing qualities of light. Executed primarily in watercolour, his paintings demonstrate a refined balance between observational precision and lyrical interpretation.

The present work, titled Mori kage no teihaku (Anchorage in the Shade of the Forest), depicts a solitary sailboat moored beside a wooded shoreline. The composition is constructed around the interplay of vertical tree trunks, the delicate geometry of the vessel’s mast, and the reflective surface of the water.

A restrained palette of silvery blues, muted greens and soft earth tones enhances the contemplative character of the scene. Transparent layers of pigment and finely controlled brushwork create a subtle atmospheric depth characteristic of Japanese watercolour practice in the second half of the twentieth century.

Particularly noteworthy is the preservation of the original Japanese label on the reverse, identifying both the artist and the title of the work, together with Yoshida’s handwritten signature and personal seal. The monogram “RYU” appearing on the recto corresponds to an alternative reading associated with the character (Takashi/Ryū) in the artist’s given name.

The work represents a fine example of post-war Japanese landscape painting, combining the technical vocabulary of Western watercolour with the distinctly Japanese appreciation for stillness, seasonal nuance and contemplative space.
